TK2 Players Junior Face Mask

The TK2 Face Mask has been specifically developed to protect young players during penalty corner defence. Unlike other types of protective equipment, face masks for field players are currently not covered by the European standard EN 13546, creating a gap in formal regulation.

To address this, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) supported a research initiative at Loughborough University, which now forms the basis of the current FIH recommendations for face protection.

FIH Performance Categories for Face Masks

Based on this research, the FIH has defined two performance categories for field hockey face masks:

Category 1

Masks tested with a hockey ball fired at 128 km/h (80 mph). These masks meet all requirements for fit, facial coverage, mechanical strength, and impact protection. They are suitable for all levels of play, including elite competition.

Category 2

Masks tested at 96 km/h (60 mph) and meeting all key protection criteria. These masks are intended for lower playing levels, such as junior and youth hockey.

All masks labelled “FIH Recommended” have passed these rigorous tests and are produced by manufacturers participating in the FIH Quality Programme. Category 1 masks are also approved for Category 2 use, providing broad protection across age groups and playing levels.

The TK2 Face Mask meets the requirements of FIH Category 2.
