To address this, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) supported a research initiative at Loughborough University, which now forms the basis of the current FIH recommendations for face protection.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFIH Performance Categories for Face Masks\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBased on this research, the FIH has defined two performance categories for field hockey face masks:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCategory 1\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMasks tested under conditions where a hockey ball is fired at 128 km\/h (80 mph). These masks meet all requirements for fit, facial coverage, mechanical strength, and impact protection. They are suitable for all levels of play, including elite competition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCategory 2\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMasks tested at 96 km\/h (60 mph) and meeting all essential protection criteria. These are intended for lower playing levels, such as junior hockey.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAll masks labelled “FIH Recommended” have passed these demanding tests and are manufactured by companies that are members of the FIH Quality Programme.
